TurfMutt sitting under a tree

According to news reports, a huge heat dome will scorch nearly half of the entire United States this weekend. That means many parents like you will be looking for things to do inside with your kiddos.

It’s TurfMutt and the Outdoor Powers to the rescue!

The TurfMutt website has a ton of interesting, engaging and educational activities for kids. It’s all based on STEM (science, technology, engineering amd math) standards for elementary schoolers. So the activities and games are not only fun, they also keep your kids learning!

Go to this link to print off a sheet of character cutouts of TurfMutt, the Outdoor Powers and the environmental villains they are fighting. Then, help your kids carefully cut out the characters. Now, your child can create a story about how they can help TurfMutt and the Outdoor Powers save the planet one yard at a time.

Need some inspiration? Check out the winning entries from this year’s Be a Backyard Superhero contest. It’s sponsored by Scholastic and the OPEI Education Foundation, the folks behind the TurfMutt program.

This year, two children won $5,000 each for a green space makeover at their schools! One winner wrote a great story, while another crafted  a catchy rap.

See? The sky is the limit! Encourage your child to let his or her imagination go wild with ideas about how they, too, can be a backyard superhero just like TurfMutt.
