yellow dog eating a treat out of a person's hand

Feb. 23 is National Dog Biscuit Day. TurfMutt has taken a break from snacking on his favorite treats to stop by with an important reminder for dog owners. Not all the people foods that humans think are delicious are good for our dogs!

According to the ASPCA, here are the top 5 ingredients and foods to keep away from your dog in order to keep them happy and healthy.

Chocolate, Coffee & Caffeine
When ingested by pets, these foods can cause vomiting, diarrhea and even death. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is to dogs!

Grapes & Raisins
These fruits cause kidney failure and should be avoided.

Onions, Garlic & Chives
These veggies and herbs not only cause upset stomach, in high enough doses they can also lead to red blood cell damage.

Xylitol
This artificial sweetener is found in a number of products like gum, toothpaste and baked goods. Dogs who ingest xylitol get an upset tummy and prolonged exposure can lead to seizures and liver failure.

TurfMutt’s best advice? Skip the people food altogether and opt for dog-specific treats…on National Dog Biscuit Day and beyond!
