Summer is sizzling across much of the country, sending the mercury rising. When it’s hot for you, it’s also hot for your pets. Here are TurfMutt’s top tips for keeping furry friends safe in the summer heat and humidity.
- Limit exercise on hot days. Asphalt and concrete get baked by the summer sun, which can quickly burn your pet’s paws. You’ll want to walk your pet during the coolest parts of the day – typically early morning or evening. Always bring along water to keep your pet hydrated.
- Remember grass is cooler than asphalt or bare ground. Your lawn – as well as parks and green spaces – are like air conditioning for the environment. According to research, grass is about 20 degrees cooler than asphalt or bare ground. That means your yard, community parks, and green spaces are a good option for beating the heat with your pet!
- Provide shade. Just like humans, pets will be most comfortable inside during the summer months. When you must be outside with your furry friend, find a shady spot to walk or rest.
- Never leave your pet in a parked car. Temperatures inside a car shoot to 120 degrees or more in a matter of minutes. Don’t ever leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even for a brief period of time. Fido will be happiest and safest left at home while you run errands.
