Plants that help prevent backyard pests  

Are you interested in an eco-friendly way to tell pests to bug off in your backyard? TurfMutt to the rescue! From herbs to ornamentals, here’s a list of plants that help repel unwanted insects in the family yard.

Basil
Basil may be delicious in your dishes, but it’s off-putting to house flies and mosquitoes. Plant some in areas where you like to entertain (and near the kitchen door for easy access!).

Chrysanthemums
These petal-full flowers deter ants, Japanese beetles, ticks, fleas, spider mites and roaches, among others. The ingredient in chrysanthemums that does the trick? Pyrethrum, which (in concentrate) can kill flying and jumping insects.

Lavender
Lavender has a lovely scent that most humans appreciate. But it repels flies, fleas, moths and mosquitoes. Fresh lavender works wonders. When it’s too cold to grow it, you can tie dry bouquets to keep unwanted “guests” outdoors.

Marigolds
Marigolds make a marvelous border flower for those who want to keep aphids, mosquitoes and even rabbits away from parts of the yard. Pro tip: they do best in sunny spots.

Petunias
Petunia’s have a reputation for being “nature’s pesticide.” Available in a variety of colors, these pretty plants repel asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, squash bugs and more!
