The National Audubon Society has kicked off its 121st annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which starts Dec. 14 and continues through January 5, and you are encouraged to participate. Researchers are counting on tens of thousands of volunteers to help gather data about the birds in their community.
This early-winter bird census is the nation’s longest-running community science bird project. The count helps scientists understand the movement, range and fluctuation of the bird populations. You may remember that last year’s count led scientists to the startling discovery that nearly 3 billion birds have disappeared in North America since 1970.
