Backyard bugs can be a real nuisance, and – in the case of mosquitoes – may even be harmful to your health. Since insects outnumber humans by a ratio of about 200 million to 1, there is no avoiding them completely. But, there are a few simple and sensible steps you can take to keep insects from invading.

  • Plant natural insect repellents – like marigold, geranium, mint, thyme and basil – in your backyard to naturally – and beautifully – keep bugs at bay.
  • Don’t use indoor lights in outdoor fixtures. Instead, use yellow outdoor lights which are not as attractive to bugs.
  • Clean up any standing water in pots, plastic pools and other outdoor areas. These are a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Keep the area around your house free from debris. Make sure no leaves are piling up, and trim back the shrubs and trees around your home. Dead branches, plants and flowers are particularly attractive to pests.
