Bat hanging upside down

Bat Week is underway (Oct. 24-31), and TurfMutt wants to take some time to salute these fellow backyard superheroes.

Did you know bats are amazing animals that are vital to our health, environment and economy? They feed on insect pests. Bats also pollinate important food crops. Finally, they spread seeds that grow new trees.

Our living landscapes depend on bats, and so do people!

But, unfortunately, bats are in decline and need our help. That’s what Bat Week is all about. It’s a chance for all of us to take action to be a hero for bats.

Here are a few ways you can help support the bat population.

  • Plant for pollinators. Add some plants to your yard and patio to attract insects and feed bats.
  • Install a water feature. Bats (and birds!) use ponds and birdbaths for drinking water.
  • Go outside! Adventures in nature help us appreciate the natural environment around us. Taking a walk at sunset is a great time to see bats in action.
  • Add a bat box to your backyard. Or, have fun with it and build a bat cave with your family. Here’s a how-to sheet.
  • Turn out the lights. Light pollution affects insect population, disrupts bat migration and deters sensitive bat species.
  • Share information about the importance of bats with your friends and family. Need help? Check out this link for info.
