This spring, TurfMutt collaborated with Scholastic to host the annual “Be a Backyard Superhero” contest for kids in grades K-5. The grand prize winners received a $5,000 grant to improve the yards and green spaces at their schools.
To enter the contest, students had to create an original picture using the TurfMutt character cutouts. Students wrote stories to accompany their artwork showing how they are Backyard Superheroes. Their stories explained how the kids are combating the environmental villains Carbon Creep, Dust Demon, Dr. Runoff, and Heat Freak while working to save living landscapes.
This year’s winners were Ali Tomlinson of Playa Vista, California (K-2 category), and Kashvi Ramani of Ashburn, Virginia (3-5 category). Check out this creativity that Ali and Kashvi showed in their entries!
Nearly 800 children entered this year’s contest that started in February and ended in April. Checks were awarded earlier this month. TurfMutt wants to give a high-paw to everyone who participated!
He also wants to remind kids that they can continue to practice their backyard superhero skills, even during summer break. Just visit TurfMutt.com for hands-on activity sheets, an interactive game, digital story books and more!
Summer is also a good time for the whole family to learn more about the importance of living landscapes. Living landscapes benefit the environment, as well as our health and wellbeing.
