The fall planting season is getting underway, so there is no better time to turn attention to the importance of planting native trees, plants and flowers rather than exotic versions.

Native plants are made for your ecosystem, so they need less water and fertilization to survive. This is good for you (less time doing yard work!) and the environment. Also, native plant species are important because they support the local insects and wildlife.

Go to your local nursery or to this online gardening site to find your climate zone and to discover what plants are native and which will grow well in your area.

Is your yard a good example of native gardening? Share your photos here and on our Facebook page.
