The article shares tips for fall maintenance and assessment that will help ensure your yard is in tip-top shape when spring arrives. That’s something that’s good for your entire family – your pet included!

Here is a summary of the tips Fido Friendly shared.

• Evaluate your yard.
  When yard chores slow down for the season, it’s a perfect time to examine what you have in your living landscape to determine where trees, plants or shrubs need to be planted. You can also make note of anything that needs to be pruned and what features to enhance in your green space.
• Complete yard clean-up.
  If you haven’t already, clear the paths and other walkways that your family and pets use so they are clean during the fall and winter season.

• Choose the right plants.
  If you’re in an area where you’re still able to plant this fall, make sure to plant the “right” plants. Check the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic garden plants for advice on what known toxic plants to avoid. The climate map will help you choose the right trees, shrubs, grasses and flowering plants for your climate zone.

• Review your owner manuals.
  Re-acquaint yourself with how to handle winter equipment safely and determine if there are any maintenance needs to be addressed.

• Service & store your equipment.
  Before storing your lawnmower and other warm-weather power equipment, clean and service it or take it to a small engine shop. Drain and change engine oil and dispose of old/used oil safely. Service the air filter and perform other maintenance activities directed by the service manual. Also, check and service your winter equipment if needed.
