August 23rd

There seems to be a “national day” set aside for everything under the sun. But this is one day TurfMutt can really get excited about! Sunday, August 26 is National Dog Day.

It’s a day that celebrates all breeds in an effort to draw attention to the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year – just like TurfMutt was. Remember, he’s a former street dog who has a happy tale (and tail!) thanks to the love of his human, Kris. Kris found TurfMutt on the street and gave him a new “leash” on life. National Dog Day also honors dogs that work to save lives, keep us safe, and offer comfort.

There are many ways to celebrate the day dedicated to dogs. Here are a few ideas, courtesy of TurfMutt.

  • Adopt a pet from a local shelter or rescue organization.
  • Spread the word to “adopt don’t shop” by talking to your friends and family about your experience adopting or sharing photos of your rescue dog on social media.
  • Volunteer at a local animal shelter.
  • Donate money or much-needed items to a local shelter or rescue organization.
  • Spruce up your outdoor living room (your dog’s favorite room “in” the house!) for your pup. Plant hardy turfgrass, dog-friendly plants, or a big shade tree under which Fido can rest.
  • Give your dog lots of love – however she prefers to receive it. Cuddle on the couch, go for a nice long walk, get him his favorite treat, or buy her a new squeaky toy.
