It’s that time of year when we make our list and check it twice. But what do you get that hard-to-buy-for person or the one who has everything? Why not give the gift of green?

Give the gift of “green” this holiday season

Trees and shrubs are a great holiday gift and fall into the “gifts that keep on giving” category. The average tree produces enough oxygen for a family of four. Plus, planting trees and shrubs is one of the most effective ways to clean the atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Shade trees make a lasting gift by helping reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 50 percent.

Be sure to choose shrubs and trees that are native to your area. You can check out TurfMutt’s U.S. Ecosystems Map to determine which types of plants are best for your climate. And, you can add to your gift by getting your family to help the recipient plant the tree or bush. It’s a great way to get outside and active with your family, and you can help reinforce the importance of green space with your children while you’re planting.
