Right about now you might be wishing you had been more fastidious about keeping a journal last year. As you flip through those cheery seed and plant catalogs, think back to what you wished you had had more of during the harvest season. More beans? More cucumbers? More flowers?  How about that empty corner that could use a specimen tree or shrub?

If you can’t remember, now is a great time to get a new pocket-size journal to record those thoughts as spring emerges. Keep it with you when you visit your local garden center or nursery. Take inventory of the potting soil, containers and seeds you already have. Stick with your plan when you go shopping for new items. It is easy to go overboard after several months of gray. We still have a few more weeks before planting begins in full force. All the more reason to enjoy the bright colors of those catalogs to keep the dream of a vibrant back yard alive!
