Back to school time is just around the corner. Every parent wants to set their child up for school-year success, and a good night’s sleep is key. Did you know that adding more outdoor time can actually help your child get better sleep?

According to a National Wildlife Federation report, there is a connection between the time kids spend playing outdoors and sleep deprivation. The report states that children and teens lose anywhere from 10-14 hours of sleep each week, due largely in part to an addiction to electronic games and television. Sleep deprivation can lead to stunted growth, poor performance at school, anxiety or depression and even obesity.

Getting outside more is an easy way to combat this problem. Outdoor time helps regulate the body’s “sleep clock,” making children more alert during the day and sleepier at night. Green settings are soothing for children (and adults!). Finally, outside exercise helps improve motor skills and encourage creativity. All of this contributes to a better night’s sleep.
