In honor of September, a.k.a. National Honey Month, we wanted to share some interesting facts about bees and honey.
- According to the National Honey Board Americans consume about 1.3 pounds of honey per person each year.
- In order to make just one pound of honey bees must tap about two million flowers.
- There are more than 300 varieties of honey in the country, and each has its own unique flavor and color, depending on where the bees collected the nectar. Click here to find a varietal near you.
- Honey is used for a variety of things from soothing sore throats to boosting energy and more. What are your favorite uses for honey?
While they are flying around gathering nectar for honey, honey bees are also performing another important function – pollination. A third of our diet comes from insect-pollinated plants, and 80% of that pollination – of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes – happens thanks to honey bees. (So next time you see a honey bee in your yard and want to tell it to buzz off – think twice!)
