Spring has officially sprung. To celebrate, TurfMutt has some top-dog tips for getting your outdoor living room ready for warmer weather. Remember, by choosing the right plants for your climate and lifestyle, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful green space your entire family will enjoy all summer long.
Know your climate zone.
Planting the right plant in the right place by understanding your local climate will help you select plants that will thrive with minimal work. Check out the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to learn which shrubs, trees and grasses will do best in your location.
Plant for pollinators & wildlife.
Your living landscapes aren’t only for your enjoyment. They are also vital to pollinators (bees, butterflies and birds) and other backyard wildlife. These creatures rely on certain plants in your backyard ecosystem for food and shelter. Planting nectar and pollen-rich flowers that are appropriate for your climate will help nourish pollinators and create a whimsical area you’ll enjoy all summer long.
Understand your lifestyle needs.
Your family yard expands the living space of your home. Determine how you use your yard, and then plant “activity zones” accordingly. Do you need a grassy area for your kids and pets to play? Would a shade tree be helpful during hot weather? Do you travel a lot, or will you be home to care for your plants?
Plant for pets.
Your pets’ favorite “room” is your family yard, so keep their needs in mind when you’re deciding what to plant. Hardy grasses are more likely to withstand pet traffic. You’ll want to use soft, yet sturdy, foliage in heavily-trafficked areas of your yard. Save delicate flowers for raised planters or patio pots. To know which plants are dangerous to your pets, download the ASPCA’s list of poisonous plants.
