The temperatures are dropping in many areas of the country. While it can be fun to explore the winter wonderland with your family – including your dog – there are some steps you need to take to ensure Fido stays safe during cold weather.

Here are TurfMutt’s tried and true tips.

  • If it’s too cold for you to stand outside without a coat, it’s too cold for your dog to be outdoors, too. Be a pet pal, and bring your dog inside!
  • Choose sunny parts of the day for outdoor exercise. The vitamin D is good for both of you, and the sun will help keep you warmer, too.
  • Dehydration can happen even in the winter months. Be sure your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times.
  • Take special care to clean your dog’s paws after an outdoor outing. Snow and ice can accumulate in between the pads, leading to discomfort and chapping. Winter salt is toxic for pups, so rinse and dry your dog’s paws after walking on sidewalks to keep her safe.
  • We all know it’s not safe to leave your pup in the car during hot days, but did you know it can be equally dangerous in the cold? Your dog will be safest – and most comfortable – being left at home while you run errands.

When in doubt, TurfMutt suggests cuddling on the couch with your canine for a cozy wintertime activity everyone will enjoy!
