June 27th

fireworks light up the sky

Did you know that the 5th of July is traditionally the busiest day of the year at animal shelters? That’s because so many scared pets run away from home during 4th of July festivities.

TurfMutt wants to help ensure your pets are safe on Independence Day, and offers these tips for pet parents.

  • Prepare for the worst-case scenario by ensuring your pet’s microchip and tag information is updated with your current contact details, just in case they get away from home.
  • Never use fireworks around your pets. Not only can they potentially harm your furry friend, fireworks are also very loud and scary for animals. Instead, opt to keep your pets inside in a quiet, escape-proof area of your home.
  • If your pet is afraid of loud noises and fireworks, consider leaving the radio or TV on to drown out the sound while the rest of the family enjoys the fireworks show. A pressure wrap garment can also help sooth anxious dogs.
  • Keep glow sticks, charcoal, people food and alcoholic beverages away from your pet. You should also never spray your pet with insect repellent or sunscreen.
