Did you catch Saturday’s episode of “Lucky Dog” on CBS? If so, you saw TurfMutt help a rescue dog like himself named Scarlett find her new fur-ever home.
TurfMutt’s owner Kris Kiser has been doing guest appearances on the Emmy Award-winning show. He helps potential families learn how to tailor their environment for their new rescue dog. Along the way, he’s also sharing with them how to do the right thing environmentally by teaching them about the importance of living landscapes (grass, trees, shrubs and plants).
Scarlett’s new family lives in California, which has been impacted by a severe drought. But they’ve done a great job of creating living landscapes that can survive, even in the dry conditions.
They have the right plants for the right spots. Additionally, they have lots of climate-appropriate Bermuda grass that acts like a “little air conditioner” helping to cool the community, their yard and their home.
Unlike mulch or hardscape, grass helps absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen and combat the heat island effect. All of the asphalt and concrete in our neighborhoods heats up during the day, and when it rains, the water just washes off the hard surfaces.
Grass, on the other hand, absorbs and cleans the water like a sponge. Additionally, plants, grass and trees help cool your home, reducing your energy costs.
According to Kris, Scarlett’s new family has the perfect TurfMutt landscape! They have the right grass and lots of flowering plants to help pollinators and give animals and insects a natural habitat.
