It isn’t officially summer according to the calendar, but many homeowners are already in summer yardwork mode. TurfMutt has some friendly reminders about wise water practices, no matter where you live. Remember, lawns are healthier when they don’t get too much water. You want your grass to grow deep roots as it seeks water – making it less susceptible to disease.

Watch TurfMutt’s smart watering video.

  • Use smart irrigation. This system will keep you from using too much water by sensing how much your lawn needs. Most lawns need only about an inch of water per week.
  • Check your sprinkler system annually. You’ll want to look for leaks and inefficiencies. Consult your local lawn care specialist if you’re in over your head here.
  • Watch the weather. There’s no need to water after a big rainstorm, obviously. Don’t rely on a “set it and forget it” irrigation schedule.
  • Choose turfgrass wisely. Check your climate zone on the Plant Hardiness Map to determine which variety will thrive in your microclimate. Some types of turf like Burmuda and Buffalo do particularly well in dry climates and can even withstand the traffic of children and pets!
  • Watch the clock. Watering in the morning is the best practice so you don’t lose precious moisture to evaporation during the hottest parts of the day.
