5 tips to keep Fido safe this July 4th.

Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with your entire family, many times in your own backyard. But did you know that it can be a dangerous time for your pet? According to HomeAgain, the pet recovery organization, more pets get lost on July 4th than any other day of the year.

This Fourth of July consider these tips to keep your four-legged family members safe.

To keep your pet safe and sound this Independence Day, TurfMutt offers these tips.

1. Leave your dog inside your home during your celebration, preferably in a kennel or a room where she feels comfortable and safe. It might be helpful to offer her a special treat, such as a peanut-butter-stuffed chew toy to keep her occupied. Another idea is to play music to drown out the sound of fireworks.

2. Many items that make a backyard BBQ or party fun for humans are hazardous to our four-legged friends. Keep your pet away from dangerous substances, including people food like chocolate, grapes, alcohol and raisins. Insect repellent (unless it is specified for animals), citronella, lighter fluid and all fireworks are also hazardous to your furry friends.

3. Be sure your pet gets plenty of exercise before the festivities begin so they are better able to relax.

4. Ensure your pet’s ID tags are updated and attached to his or her collar, which should be worn at all times.

5. Have a current photo of your pet available, just in case.
