The first week of May is National Herb Week, and in celebration here are some tips for growing herbs. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, herbs are one of the easiest plants to manage – either on your kitchen counter top, in your backyard, or in containers on a porch or balcony.
1. Choose your herbs. Some of the easiest-to-grow varieties include mint, parsley and chives.
2. Select your spot. Herbs can be grown inside or outside, in containers or in the ground. However, light is an absolute must, and you want to make sure your plants get the recommended dosage of sun per day. If you’re growing in pots make sure the pots have drainage holes to let excess water escape.
3. Water wisely. Use the soil as your indicator for when to water. If it looks or feels dry it might be time to give your herbs a little moisture.
4. Trim with care. Trimming the leaves and the tops of your herb plants stimulates growth. But be careful not to harvest more than a third of the leaves, as this may harm your plant.
