We often talk about climate zones in the U.S. and the importance of knowing which plants thrive in which zone. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 11 separate zones; each zone is 10°F warmer (or colder) in an average winter than the adjacent zone.
But, did you also know there are heat zones?
In 1997, the American Horticultural Society developed a Heat Zone map that divides the United States into 12 heat zones. Each zone indicates the average number of days that are greater than 86 degrees F., the temperature at which plants start to suffer damage from high temperatures.
