Happy National Hot Dog Month! TurfMutt loves any excuse to get outdoors, enjoy the backyard and grill. He’s also sniffed out some fun facts about America’s go-to grilling food, the humble hot dog.
- Each year Americans buy more than 350 million pounds of hot dogs at retail stores. That is equal to 9 billion hot dogs!
- The average person eats about 70 hot dogs per year, and hot dogs are served in 95 percent of U.S. homes.
- Major League Baseball (MLB) expects to sell more than 20.5 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums this year.
- Travelers through Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport consume six times more hot dogs than visitors to Los Angeles International and LaGuardia combined.
- On Independence Day alone, Americans enjoy 150 million hot dogs. That’s enough to stretch from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles more than five times!
- Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, is traditionally credited with originating the frankfurter. However, some claim that it was actually created in the late 1600’s by Johann Georghehner, a butcher, living in Coburg, Germany.
